On the warm Tuesday afternoon of 3 October, 1899, a man named John S. Thurman of St. Louis, Missouri was granted a patent for the world’s first motorized vacuum cleaner. And the pets of the world have been terrorized ever since.

So on this day, let’s all choose to use brooms instead of vacuums. And on behalf of our pets, let’s take a moment to raise those brooms and say, “To hell with you, John S. Thurman of St. Louis, Missouri.” To hell with you.
